Intuitive Painting On the Go

One thing I love about my job as an artist is getting to experiment with paint and developing new styles and techniques by accident!

This image and style came to be from my time painting in the van while road tripping to Montana in August.

Painting precise detailed pieces while sitting in the passenger seat, is no small task. While on our trip, I decided to experiment with dobbing oil paint straight from the tube directly onto the canvas. Rather than over mixing the paint, I would place spots of color next to each other until the canvas was filled with colors. Some mixed together spontaneously, resulting in a beautiful effect.

After we came back from our trip, I had another opportunity to try the new technique again. It was late August around 5pm, that time of the day when the sun is starting to lower a bit, but it's still bright out. When you are heading west, looking into the sun, the Iowa rural landscape is absolutely stunning! I had a tiny 4x4 canvas with me, and my paints were still in the van. I was so inspired by the multitude of shades of gold and green in the fields and pastures, that I just had to start painting.

This 4x4 painting resulted after that 30 minute drive from Davenport to Blue Grass, my home town, where we were heading to celebrate the birthdays of my 2 nieces.

My husband and I were laughing as we entered their neighborhood, as I was hastily trying to complete the painting, and he was swerving the van to try to help me create a more "spontaneous" painting!

I am excited to share that this image and others are now available in multiple sizes up to 30 inches+ on canvas, framed prints, etc. The original is also available!
